Passports

The passport is a document needed for identification and travelling in all countries whose governments are recognized by the Italian government.

To enter certain countries, you may still need a visa issued by the authorities of the country you wish to visit. More information is available on the website viaggiaresicuri.it

WHO CAN APPLY FOR A PASSPORT?

A passport can generally be requested by Italian citizens registered with AIRE and residing in the consular district of Brussels (Belgian municipalities with postal codes between 1000 and 3999 and between 8000 and 9992) in one of the following cases:

  • issuance of first passport;
  • possession of an expired or expiring Italian passport;
  • theft, loss, or damage to a non-expired Italian passport.

The passport is issued in the absence of any impediments as per art. 3 of Law No. 1185/1967

HOW TO APPLY FOR A PASSPORT?

The passport appointment must be scheduled independently exclusively through the Prenot@mi platform.

WHAT TO DO ON THE DAY OF THE APPOINTMENT AND WHAT DOCUMENTATION SHOULD I PRESENT?

  • Please arrive at the Consulate General entrance 15 minutes before your appointment time. No animals, suitcases, or means of transportation (including bicycles or scooters) may be brought into the Consulate.
  • Access is permitted exclusively to the applicant and the accompanying person only if the applicant requires special assistance.
  • If the appointment is for a minor, the minor must be accompanied by at least one parent (or the parent/guardian exercising parental responsibility).

Documentation required:

  • 1 color passport photo, taken within the last 6 months, on a white background, compliant with ICAO regulations.
  • Valid Belgian residence permit or Belgian identity card. Those who also hold Belgian citizenship must present a certificate of Belgian nationality indicating the date and method of acquisition.
  • Previous Italian passport held, or, in the event of theft or loss, a report filed with the local police authorities.
  • For minors accompanied by only one parent with parental responsibility, the following documentation must also be submitted, depending on the case:
  1. If the absent parent is a European Union citizen: consent form signed by the absent parent and accompanied by a photocopy of an identification document;
  2. If the absent parent is a citizen of a country outside the European Union: signed consent form from the absent parent, with signature authenticated by the local authorities or, if resident in another country, by the competent Italian diplomatic-consular office.

HOW LONG IS THE PASSPORT VALID?

  • 3 years for minors under 3 years of age;
  • 5 years for minors between 3 and 18 years of age;
  • 10 years for adults.

Any changes of address do not require the issuance of a new passport; the new municipality of residence can be printed upon request in the residency section of the valid passport.

HOW AND WHEN DO I RECEIVE THE PASSPORT?

If the consular file is up to date and there are no impediments, the passport is generally issued on the same day as the appointment.

HOW MUCH DOES A PASSPORT COST AND HOW DO I PAY?

A passport costs €116.20. If an emergency passport is issued, an emergency fee of €50.00 must be paid.

Payment is made at the Consular Office on the day of the appointment, preferably by debit card (Bancontact). Cash payments are not accepted but in exceptional cases and with prior agreement.

DECLARATION OF ACCOMPANIMENT FOR <14-OLDS TRAVELLING WITHOUT PARENTS

Minors under 14 may travel accompanied by a person (or company) different than the parents or legal guardians only if they have a special declaration of accompaniment issued by the competent Italian or Belgian authority, certifying the name of the person/organization/transport company to whom the minors are entrusted.

WHAT IS THE MAIN APPLICABLE LEGISLATION?

  • Law No. 1185 of November 21, 1967. Passport Regulations (amended by Law No. 3 of January 16, 2003, and by Legislative Decree No. 135 of September 25, 2009, converted into Law No. 166 of November 20, 2009).
