Motor Vehicles and Driving Licences

ITALIAN LICENSE PLATE RADIATION

The Consulate General has no competence regarding the cancellation of Italian license plates, as from 1 January 2020, this operation must be carried out in Italy before exporting the vehicle to Belgium.
Information relating to the cancellation of vehicles for export can be found on the ACI website (http://www.aci.it/i-servizi/guide-utili/guida-pratiche-auto/aeroporto.html)
In Belgium, the authority responsible for vehicle registrations is the Direction pour l’Immatriculation des Véhicules, DIV
(https://www.belgium.be/fr/mobilite/vehicules/immatriculation).
For further information you can contact the Social Office: sociale.bruxelles@esteri.it  or call 0032 02 543 15 75.

DRIVING LICENCES

In accordance with current European legislation (European Directive 91/439/EEC of 21/07/1991) and the relevant national provisions, Italian citizens resident abroad in a European Union country who are duly registered with the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (AIRE) must, with a view to renewing their driving licence, apply exclusively to the authorities of their country of residence, which will arrange for its conversion.

For this purpose, contact the Belgian commune of residence directly.

Where the Belgian municipality requires a certificate of validity of the driving licence, this document can be requested via email directly to the licensing office of the issuing motor vehicle authority or online on the motorist portal.
In the event that the Belgian municipality also needs an AIRE registration certificate, this must be requested directly, by email or by telephone, from the municipality of AIRE registration or downloaded from the ANPR website: https://www.anpr.interno.it
