Emergency Travel Document – ETD

For Italian citizens resident outside Belgium – Emergency Travel Document – ETD

The provisional travel document (also called E.T.D. – Emergency Travel Document) is a document valid only for the return journey to Italy (or the country of permanent residence); it is issued to Italian citizens NOT resident in Belgium who are passing through.

If an Italian citizen finds himself in an emergency situation (e.g. a tourist who loses his travel document or it is stolen) and there is not enough time to apply to the competent Questura or Consulate for authorisation to issue a new passport, the Consulate General may issue a provisional travel document (ETD) valid only for the time strictly necessary for repatriation to Italy or the country of residence.

In order to obtain the ETD, the interested party may present himself, even without an appointment, at Consulate General offices, during opening hours to the public, with the following documentation:

Report of theft or loss of the travel document, made at the local Police Authority;

Two passport photos of the same series, frontal, in colour with a white background;

Original air ticket, or similar travel document, with the confirmed date of departure;

A Witness. If she/he is not in possession of a copy of her/his identity document, or similar identification document with photo (e.g. driving licence), he must be accompanied by a witness in possession of a valid identity document.
